DescriptionDescription: The artist’s own thoughts, for the exhibition Expressions in Glass 2019 It was fun doing things that were different at Orrefors. Things that did not look the way they normally did. I had experience of working with glass and design from my training at Konstfack and my own practice at my glass-blowing studio on Fjäderholmarna. When I arrived at Orrefors in 1994 I paired this knowledge with the possibilities and resources the glassworks offered. As I had the same craftsman’s idiom as the glassworkers, our collaboration could challenge and probe the limits of what could be done with glass. The glassworks’ proud tradition and expert craftmanship allowed great creative originality but also set limits, and I had to work hard to be able to do what was traditionally the “wrong” thing. In the cellar at Orrefors I found some fantastically beautiful colours from the 1950s that had been forgotten. I used them to cast “raw glass” in different shapes. These were then ground and treated with acid so that they could be given their final form with the help of a mould. The opaque colours provided a totally different form of expression from the crystal-clear glass normally used.
