DescriptionDescription: In 1954, Bengt Berglund was admitted to Gustavsberg’s newly established workshop school. There, he received two years of thorough training in all the stages and techniques of the manufacturing process. When Berglund was later employed by Gustavsberg in 1960, a coincidence became a catalyst for his liberated style of ceramics. The studio he was assigned lacked a potter’s wheel. Berglund approached this seemingly obvious obstacle for a ceramicist as a challenge. He regarded clay as a material of possibilities and soon developed his own techniques and tools. He inquisitively investigated the limits of the clay and tried to capture its softness and movements. Berglund’s method of working was new and exploratory. He folded, rolled and threw it like a dough. He etched, pressed and stamped in patterns using his fingers, dental tools and other objects with shapes and structures that caught his interest. When he did not find the shape he wanted, he developed his own pattern tools with which to stamp and emboss the clay. His creations included both intimate studio wares and public art. He allowed ceramics to grow, creating imaginative, unique sculptures. Berglund delved deep into his ceramic world, and the resultsof more than two years’ experimentation were displayed in 1963 in his debut exhibition Ansikten och gestalter (Faces and Figures) at the department store PUB’s new gallery in Stockholm. Just under a year later, 130 of Berglund’s ceramic works were shown in the Characters in Stoneware exhibition in New York, USA.
