DescriptionDescription: The urns’ decoration was created by Franz Meder after paintings in Nationalmuseum’s collection by the French painter François Boucher. The motif on the urn on the left is Boucher’s Leda and the Swan, which was displayed at the Salon in Paris in 1742. The idyllic motif on the urn on the right is called Are they thinking of the grapes? and was painted in 1747 as a commission for Queen Lovisa Ulrika’s picture gallery at Drottningholm Palace. These types of showpiece urns illustrated the factory’s technical and artistic skills and served as advertisements for simpler and more inexpensive wares with printed decoration. The show-piece urns were mainly purchased by collectors and museums or for public spaces.
