BiographyBiography: Painter of still lifes, mainly fruit pieces, and flowers. Joris van Son was born in Antwerp, where he was registered in 1643/1644 as a member of the Guild of St. Luke, and where he worked until his death. No teacher is recorded, but Van Son was clearly influenced by the Dutch still life painter Jan Davidsz. de Heem, whose most talented follower he was. His flower garlands also reveal the influence of Daniel Seghers. A son, Jan Frans, became a painter. Five apprentices are recorded between 1652 and 1665, the best known of whom is Jan Pauwel Gillemans II. Van Son also collaborated with the painters Erasmus Quellinus II and Jan de Duyts. Van Son specialized in painting fruit (vruchtenschilder), and his still lifes almost always include fruit. He painted mainly pronkstilleven, fruit pieces and breakfast pieces, but also garlands of fruit and flowers surrounding cartouches. Van Son’s paintings vary from smaller scale cabinet pieces to large banquet paintings containing luxurious pronk objects. Sixty-nine signed paintings are known; and Greindl (1983) lists another thirty-one works attributed to the artist. There are dated works by Van Son from 1640 to 1665.
