BiographyBiography: Callisto was the most prodigious and prolific of the Piazza family of artists who lived and worked in Lombardy, primarily in Lodi, in the 16th century. The older generation of artists in the family consisted of the brothers Martino and Scipio, who were mainly active in the first few decades of the century. Martino’s son Callisto rose to prominence after returning to Lodi from Brescia in 1529. As head of the family workshop, he soon received the prestigious commission to decorate the octagonal church of Santa Maria Incoronata (Tempio civico della Beata Vergine Incoronata), designed by Bramante’s student, Giovanni Battaggio. Throughout the following decades, Callisto and his family workshop continued to receive commissions in Lodi, for example for Tibaldi’s church of San Cristoforo and for the Duomo.
