BiographyBiography: Onorio Marinari was active in his native city of Florence. He was the son of the painter Gismondo Marinari, who taught him the basic skills of painting. Later he went on to the prestigious school of his relative Carlo Dolci. Marinari remained constant to Dolci’s work throughout his career. According to the biographers Orlandi and Gabburri, he had a second apprenticeship with Baldas- NM 813 NM 5251 166 167 sare Franceschini, called il Volterrano. Marinari travelled to Rome and northern Italy, where he had the opportunity to study ancient sculpture and the works of Raphael, Correggio and Titian. Among his first independent paintings are the two ovals of St Francis and St Jerome, signed and dated 1659, executed for the oratory of San Niccolò del Ceppo in Florence. Marinari’s first important public commission was St Mauro Healing the Sick (1663–66), for the Badia Fiorentina, which shows greater independence from Dolci’s work. After the latter’s death in 1686, Marinari took over his assignments for the Medici court. Dating from 1689 are the two paintings of St Agatha with a Floral Wreath for the Grand Duchess Vittoria Della Rovere. At the beginning of the 18th century, Marinari worked together with the most renowned Florentine and Tuscan painters of the time on the frescoes in the Palazzo Capponi. He played an important role in the Accademia del disegno di Firenze, where he was a member from 1679.
