BiographyBiography: Giuseppe Passeri, painter and draughtsman active in Rome between the 17th and the 18th century, was an anticipator of the early Rococo style. He studied with his uncle, the painter and biographer Giovanni Battista Passeri, before entering the prestigious studio of Carlo Maratta. There he studied Michelangelo and Annibale Carracci, Guido Reni, Domenichino and Poussin, the colours of Titian and Correggio, and above all Raphael. Passeri’s most important surviving decoration of a church interior is his scheme for Viterbo Cathedral from the 1690s. In 1693 he was elected to the Accademia di San Luca and in 1701 to the Congregazione dei Virtuosi del Pantheon. In 1700 he was appointed Pittore della Camera Apostolica by Pope Clement XI. Passeri had many patrons among the noble families of Rome, above all the Patrizi, who commissioned decorations for their country villa at Castel Giuliano, from the 1680s, and the family palace in Rome, painted in 1712‒13. In addition to his large-scale work, Passeri painted cabinet pictures and was active as a portraitist. He was also an important draughtsman, and collections of his drawings are preserved in the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf, the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle and the Albertina in Vienna.
