BiographyBiography: Bernardino di Betto, called Pinturicchio, was born in Perugia and trained in the workshop of Bartolomeo Carporali, known as the Verrocchio of Perugia. In 1481 Pinturicchio entered the painters’ guild in Rome and was summoned by Perugino to participate in the decoration of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. In the following years he worked on the Della Rovere at Santa Maria Novella and the Bufalini at Santa Maria in Aracoeli. He also executed frescoes at Spoleto and Spello, and for the last ten years of his life worked mainly for the Piccolomini family and Pandolfo Petrucci in Siena, where he was responsible for the decoration of the Piccolomini Library and of the Palazzo Petrucci. Pinturicchio carried out huge fresco decorations for several chapels and palace interiors in just a few years, which suggests a workshop with many collaborators and pupils.
