Louis Masreliez was the son of French sculptor Adrien Masreliez, who came to Sweden in 1748 to work on the Royal Palace. In 1770, Louis travelled to Italy, via Paris, to train as a history painter. When he returned to Sweden in 1783, he received almost exclusively royal commissions in interior design. In the early 1790s, Masreliez redesigned Duke Karl’s apartments in Classic style, with décor that reflected the duke’s role as admiral.
