This portrait of Gustav III was made shortly after the king had returned from his Italian journey in 1784. Sergel has captured a monarch who has aged and grown rather fat. Councillor Fredrik Axel von Fersen noted on his first meeting with the king: “After his return I found His Majesty with a healthy air, and plumper than ever.”
