This portrait of miniaturist and pastel artist Marie-Gabrielle Capet was produced in the 1780s, when she was part of the circle around the celebrated portraitist Adélaïde Labille-Guiard and her future husband François-André Vincent. The saturated colours and the coherent composition suggest that Vincent painted this portrait. The subject’s pose is almost frontal; she is turning slightly, meeting the observer with a penetrating but mild gaze.
