Rose Bertin was the leading fashion designer of her time, sometimes called Marie-Antoinette’s “minister of fashion”. As a seamstress she became a confidant of the French queen, who eventually became her friend, patron and foremost client. Bertin’s working methods and influential creations laid the foundation for the French haute couture. After the Revolution she travelled to London, but was able to return to Paris in 1795.
