Louis-Gabriel Moreau the Elder specialised in various views, not least from gardens and parks. Many of his works portray the picturesque decay in the old Baroque garden Saint-Cloud near Paris. This view includes the majestic large trees in Le Nôtre’s pleasure garden, which the Duke of Chartres sold along with the château to Louis XVI in 1785. The buildings were damaged in the war in 1870 and were later demolished, but the garden remains today.
