Rousseau gained a large cult following after his death in Ermenonville in July 1778. Landscape painter Alexandre Dunouy was one of the artists who capitalised on the philosopher’s considerable popularity. This anecdotal representation of Rousseau was probably not painted until around 1800. Dunouy’s painting style is extremely delicate with small beautiful details and colouristic accents.
