When Blondel painted his romantic self-portrait, he had probably seen his colleague Ingres’ portrayal of the artist François Marius Granet, painted in Rome in 1807. This depicts a visionary painter wrapped in a cloak. Blondel posed in the same way and with a self-confident expression. That same year, 1817, he had been awarded a gold medal for his composition titled The Death of Louis XII.
