Trompe l'œil means to deceive the eye. Using optical illusions, the artist strives to make it almost impossible for us to distinguish between painted and real objects. It requires fine brush strokes as well as knowledge of perspective. But the disclosure is as important as the fraud. Otherwise, we would not see how skilled the artist is! Klopper looks at us from the small self-portrait − a painting within the painting.
