Frederick VI was king of Denmark for much of the Golden Age. Not the most vivacious of men, he has been painted here in profile, the way monarchs have been portrayed on coins and medals since time immemorial. Eckersberg received the commission at the end of 1819. This replica was made shortly after that and sent as a gift to the Danish consul general in Portugal, José Maria O’Neill, in gratitude for his services to Denmark.
