In his youth, Pieter Lastman travelled to Italy and was influenced by contemporary Roman painting. He later developed his own style, with biblical or antique subjects in populous, brightly-coloured scenes with small figures. Rembrandt and Jan Lievens both studied for Lastman, who was the leading history painter in Amsterdam. However, after returning to their birthplace Leiden, the young artists broke with the teacher's style.
