During Gustav III’s stay in Florence in autumn 1783, Guttenbrunn painted both a portrait of the king in Swedish national dress and a rendering of Sergel. Of the two, only this portrait appears to have been preserved. The sculptor is also in national dress, combined with the badge of a commander of the Order of Vasa. He no doubt enjoyed seeing Italy again, but the king proved an extremely demanding travelling companion. Sergel was for example expected to handle his dealings with a number of artists.
