Peter Adolf Hall from Borås fundamentally changed miniature painting in France. Instead of painting with small dots and cold colours, he introduced freer brushwork and used warmer tones. In this self-portrait, however, Hall chose to paint in oils on canvas. The French Revolution brought his outstanding career to an end, as he was forced to follow his clients into exile. He died in Liège in 1793.
