Exhibition text: In the United States, the industrial-scale manufacture of pressed glass began in the 1820s. Pressing glass into metal molds streamlined production and reduced costs. In Sweden, Reijmyre Glassworks was the first to adopt the process; in 1836, they purchased molds from the industrialist Johan Wilhelm Bergström in Stockholm. Early patterns might feature the Gothic Revival style or cover the entire surface to conceal imperfections in the glass.
