Heavy ground and paint layer losses from background and frame; minor paint losses along the crack in the middle; gold on background and frame abraded; panel warped Executed in an aristocratic style, the painting may possibly have come from the archepiscopal workshop in Nov - gorod.1 To the left and right of the fig - ure of Nicholas are clear traces of the depictions, traditional in this context, of Christ and the Mother of God re - spectively. St Uar, mentioned in the text on the reverse, was a martyr whose feast day comes on 19th October and was specially celebrated in the time of Tsar Ivan IV. This icon was discovered, without an inventory number, during stocktaking in 1991, whereupon it was inventoried. Subsequent checks have revealed that it had already been enter - ed in the inventory as NMI 283, though without being marked. 1 Cf. stylistically cat. no 51. [slut]
