BeskrivningBeskrivning: Beskrivning i utst. kat. Panel made of single board with two splines inlaid on battens; back covered with textile. PROVENANCE: Olof Aschberg; Gift of O.Aschberg 1933 EXHIBITIONS: Gävle 1970, no 22; Stockholm 1988, no 53 BIBLIOGRAPHY: Kjellin 1933, no 218 CONSERVATION: Restored prior to entering NM: painting cleaned; retouches on background; NM 1949: conservation for blisters and flaking paint layers; 1970: damage to edge and background repaired. Yellowish varnish. This icon probably represents the ascetic John the Calybite (Joann Kuchnik). John the Poor for Christ, as he is often called, is supposed to have lived in Constantinople during the 5th century. He is commemorated on 15th January. The person depicted is designated prepodobnyi, i.e. a monastic saint, and thus cannot represent the Apostle John as claimed in Kjellin’s catalogue. The great plasticity and clearly indicated shading are contrary to traditional iconic theology. [slut]
