Below we see the Garden of Paradise with its fountain, from which birds are drinking. This motif becomes a paraphrase of the theme of the Nativity of the Mother of God, the appear - ance of Mary in the world being compared with the revelation of the fount of life. This iconography, particularly when combined with the caressing motif, was typical of Novgorod. So too are the figures, especially the faces, and certain ornamental details. This icon may have formed part of an iconostasis.
