NMI 145 Wood: Linden (Tilia sp.), egg tempera. Panel made of single board with two splines inlaid from opposite sides; back painted brown. Inscriptions: A) a t. 1. Paper label with hand-written text in brown ink in Cyrillic letters: 1830 / Pokrov / XVII (The protecting Veil 17th century); 2. Ink stamp of the Soviet State Export Committee; B) On right edge in pencil in Cyrillic letters: POKROV PROVENANCE: Olof Aschberg; Gift of O.Aschberg 1933 EXHIBITIONS: Malmö 1988, no 73 BIBLIOGRAPHY: Kjellin 1933, no 145; Kjellin 1956, p 258 CONSERVATION: Restored prior to entering NM: partly overpainted in later part of 19th century (see test patch in left upper part of picture), scattered retouches; NM 1959: minor blisters consolidated. Nail holes from metal mounting along the outer edges of the frame, yellowed varnish. The traditional symmetrical composition has been broken by placing the figure of Christ in a segment of sky in the top left-hand corner. Instead of being shown facing the onlooker, the Mother of God faces Christ. Otherwise it conforms to the iconographic tradition. [slut]
