BeskrivningBeskrivning: Beskrivning i Icons, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2004, kat. nr. 149: Se beskrivning i den engelska versionen Beskrivning: Description in Icons, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2004, cat. no. 149: The Mother of God "Bogolyubskaya" 17th century, Moscow (?) NMI 133 Wood: Linden (Tilia sp.), egg tempera on canvas. Central part put into new panel with two splines inlaid from opposite sides. Inscriptions a t.: A) Inscribed text in Cyrillic letters: ALEKSEY IVAN[...] / ALEKSEYA MIT[R]OPOLITA / KRESTYANTSEVA (Alexey Ivan [...] / the Metropolitan Alexey / Krestyantsev); B) Ink stamp of the Soviet State Export Committee PROVENANCE: Olof Aschberg; Gift of O.Aschberg 1933 BIBLIOGRAPHY: Kjellin 1933, no 133 CONSERVATION: Restored prior to entering NM probably around 1900; central part repainted and surrounded by painting in 17th century style. Minor paint layer losses on right side; uneven yellowish varnish The iconography conforms to the canon, with Prince Andrey Bogolubsky praying before the Mother of God.1 The prince, here referred to as blagovernyi knyaz Andrey Bogolyubsky (Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky, strong in the faith), kneels before the Mother of God, who, in intercessionary pose, presents a petition to Christ. On it is written Vladyko / Gospodi Iisuse / Khriste / Bozhi (Ruler, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God). Christ, portrayed full-length in the top right hand corner, holds in his left hand a scroll inscribed Mati / moya[...] / (Mother mine...). He is performing the twofingered benediction, which, together with the spelling of the name of Jesus, indicates the provenance from an Old Believer workshop. The Evangelists are portrayed at the corners of the outer frame: top left St John, with the scribe Prokhor, on the right Matthew, bottom left Luke and bottom right Mark. Also pictured here at the centre of the borders are, full-length, the Archangels Michael (left) and Gabriel (right), and, on the upper and lower borders, a six-winged seraph. 1 Smirnova 1996, p 174 [slut]
