BeskrivningBeskrivning: Beskrivning i Icons, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2004, kat. nr. 84: Se beskrivning i den engelska versionen. Beskrivning: Description in Icons, Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, 2004, cat. no. 84: Sixteen selected Saints in adoration Partly of polyptych, cat. nos 84-87 Late 16th-early 17th century, Moscow NMI 67 Wood: Linden (Tilia sp.), egg tempera. Panel made of three boards with two splines inlaid from opposite sides. Inscriptions a t.: A) Paper label with hand-written text in Cyrillic letters: Inv. k. n 76/85 / akt N 258 / chet[...] / k n 290[...]; B) Ink stamp of the Soviet State Export Committee PROVENANCE: Olof Aschberg; Gift of O. Aschberg 1933 BIBLIOGRAPHY: Kjellin 1933, nos 67–70; Kjellin 1956, p 291 CONSERVATION: Restored prior to entering NM: heavily repainted in antiquarian manner in beginning of 20th century, probably in a workshop in Moscow or Mstera; styl - ised reconstruction; only part of clouds on background and remains of inscription on upper border on cat. nos 84 and 87 are original; NM 1959: blisters consolidated These four icons made up a single unit, probably with the two representing the saints in a single tier as the outer pair. The centre picture of the unit must have been a fifth, now vanished icon with an image of the Mother of God, of Christ, of a Festival motif relating to the Mother of God or, possibly, a Deesis scene.1 The choice of saints was probably decided by the client. Unfortunately, most of the inscriptions have been painted over. Only those on the upper tier of cat. no 87 have been uncovered and can therefore be identified. The saints depicted are, from above left: The Holy Fools Vasilii and Maxim, Anthony and Feodosii of the Cave Monastery, Zosima and Savvatii of the Solovki Monastery and finally Makarii ( from Unzhensk?). Muscovite Princes and Tsars are depicted on the bottom tier. 1 Cf. Leningrad 1987, no 48 [slut]
