Rome c. 1589 - Venice 1623 Figure Studies for the Gathering of the Manna Pencil, point of the brush, black wash, heightened with white, contours in black chalk on grey prepared paper No watermark Inscribed at lower left in pen and brown ink: Crosato Veneto Identified by Griseri as a study for The Gathering of the Manna, painted in Mantua after 1613. Of the three elderly figures in the foreground, the one on the left seems to be Noah, on the right Abraham, with Isaac, while the middle one has not been identified. The agreement between drawing and painting is not entirely convincing and the attribution to Fetti is debatable - no firm stylistic parallels can be found among the drawings connected with him. The inscription with an attribution to Crosato calls for an explanation. The sheet is too old to be taken for a work by him. Perhaps there is a link with the Crucifixion scene with English Jesuit martyrs in the British Museum; it, too, has an old attribution to Crosato that is difficult to defend. [slut]
