Numbered at lower right in pen and brown ink: 395. (Sparre) Viviani worked closely with Barocci and never demonstrated a distinct artistic personality of his own. St. Francis' attitude is the same, in reverse, as in Barocci's "Il Perdono" on the high altar in S. Francesco in Urbino, executed c. 1574-76. Although the influences from Barocci are obvious, the old attribution to Viviani, "Il Sordo d'Urbino", seems convincing. There are great stylistic correspondences with a number of drawings in the Louvre, attributed to Viviani by Francoise Viatte and Catherine Monbeig-Goguel.
