BiografiBiografi: Nephew of (1) Luca della Robbia. He trained with his uncle and assisted in his workshop. In 1458 he enrolled in the Arte dei Maestri di Pietra e Legname (stone and woodworkers’ guild) as an intagliatore (carver), although he continued working with his uncle. His early works, including the altarpiece of the Virgin and Child with Saints (1466; Florence, Misericordia), reflect styles codified by Luca, which makes them difficult to identify among workshop products of the mid-15th century. By c. 1470 Andrea had taken over the running of the workshop. One of his first substantially autonomous works seems to have been the triptych of the Coronation of the Virgin (c. 1464) for the church of SS Fiora e Lucilla in Monte Amiata. His works are more complex and ornate than Luca’s, with more expressive figures and compositions; they also show the synthesis of sculptural and pictorial values that characterized the later production of the workshop. Works datable c. 1470 include portrait busts of particular intensity (e.g. Youth, Berlin, Bodemus.; Boy, Florence, Bargello); a group of Tobias and the Angel (1465–70; Prato, Bib. Roncioniana); the ceiling (c. 1474) of the Martini Chapel in S Giobbe, Venice; and a half-length bas-relief Virgin and Child in S Gaetano, Florence. In the same period he also made the first examples of the Virgin of the Cushion (Palermo, Gal. Reg. Sicilia) and the Virgin Adoring the Child (examples in Oxford, Ashmolean; Genoa, S Maria della Consolazione; and elsewhere). The earliest known documented work by Andrea is a tabernacle of the Virgin and Child with Cherubim (1475; Florence, Bargello). Other works produced around that year include the altarpiece of St Francis Receiving the Stigmata and Tobias and the Angel for the S Bartolomeo Chapel in Santa Croce, Florence, and a lunette with St Michael the Archangel (New York, Met.).
