DescriptionDescription: During Gustav III’s stay in Florence in autumn 1783, Guttenbrunn painted both a portrait of the king in Swedish national dress and a rendering of Sergel. Of the two, only this portrait appears to have been preserved. The sculptor is also in national dress, combined with the badge of a commander of the Order of Vasa. He no doubt enjoyed seeing Italy again, but the king proved an extremely demanding travelling companion. Sergel was for example expected to handle his dealings with a number of artists.

Additional texteDescription: Sergel arrived in Rome in 1767 and stayed for 12 years. His sculptures were strongly influenced by nature studies and the Antique sculptures he saw in the city. However, he did not just stay in Rome. Early on, he also visited the Kingdom of Naples-Sicily in southern Italy. On his journey he saw the churches of Naples, the art collections at the palace, the Herculaneum excavations and the royal antiquities cabinet in Portici that contained sculptures from Pompei. He also visited the summit of the majestic Vesuvius volcano and its crater. Description: During his stay in Florence in the autumn of 1783, Guttenbrunn painted a portrait of Gustav III and a picture of Sergel. Of these, only this portrait appears to have survived. Sergel is wearing national costume and the commander’s badge of the Royal Order of Vasa. The sculptor undoubtedly enjoyed his return to Italy, but Gustav III was a very demanding travel companion and it was Sergel’s task to manage contacts with other artists.
