DescriptionDescription: Battle Scene. Laid down. Numbered in pen and brown ink at lower left: 41 (Bellori), at lower right: 504 (Sparre). The Crozat sale, 1741, included four lots (nos. 289-92) of drawings by Giacomo Cortese. The lots contained seventytwo drawings. Tessin bought six from lot 290. Two of these can be identified for sure in the Nationalmuseum collection. None of the other four has been traced either in the list of 1739/42 or in the museum's collection. E.L. Holt has identified 34 sheets from the Bellori volume in the British Museum, another thirteen sheets are in the Louvre, and one in Musée des Beaux Arts in Rouen. The Bellori drawings form a homogeneous group of rather rough, rapidly executed sketches, very few of which have been equated with corresponding paintings. They may have served Courtois as a source of reference to be used in creating compositions for his paintings. [Bjurström, It. Drawings, cat. no. 660]
