BiographyVery little is known about the Verhoek brothers. According to Nagler, Pieter was the pupil of the glass painter Jacob van der Ulft, started out as a glass painter and later depicted battles and military movements. The younger brother also painted battles, inspired by Jacques Courtois. There is, in addition, Gijsbert’s son Jacob, who painted in the manner of his uncle Pieter. According to Thieme-Becker, Gijsbert was a pupil of his older brother and of Adam Pijnacker. In documents published by A. D. De Vries, Gijsbert was buried in 1690 as a “kunstschilder”, the elder brother in 1702 as a “marmerschilder”. [Magnusson, Dutch Drawings]
