BiographyPainter of religious scenes and portraits.
Pupil of Cornelis Schut. After a short stay in London in
1641 Philippe Vleughels went to Paris where he
worked in the studio of Jean Michel Picart, executing
copies after Anthony van Dyck. He was introduced to
the Flemish colony’s club “la Chasse” by Pieter van Mol
and became a member of French Académie Royale
from 1663. He was awarded numerous commissions
from Brisard, a Parliamentary Counsellor, and executed
forty pictures for the church of the Carmelite Convent
at St. Denis. The Queen Mother commissioned a
depiction of the Crucifixion for the Hôtel Dieu, and he
painted numerous altarpieces for churches in and
around Paris. He was a follower of Rubens.
