Casimir Laurin, nicknamed Murre, was the son of Carl Larsson’s friends and patrons Carl G. and Gunilla Laurin. Murre is three in this painting. He eventually became an officer, but also published his father’s letters and notes on Stockholm’s cultural scene around 1900. The reds and greens are unusually well-preserved in this portrait. In many of Carl Larsson’s watercolours the original hues have faded through exposure to light.
