During the landscaping of the vast garden at Versailles, dense palisades of deciduous trees were planted, but trees were also planted on large areas of the garden behind them. This necessitated a constant supply of trees, which local tree nurseries were not able to provide. King Louis XIV therefore ordered trees to be obtained from more distant locations, such as Normandy, which required both better roads and purpose-built vehicles.
