Danish artist Kristian Zahrtmann painted Adam on his own in Paradise, surrounded by the garden’s fruit and flowers, several times. In the artist’s era, the motif’s homoerotic expression carried greater weight than its Biblical content, so the painting received scathing criticism when it was exhibited in Den Frie Udstilling in Copenhagen in 1914.
