After studying in Germany, Carl Trägårdh arrived in France in 1885. He spent several periods staying in the artists’ colony at Grez-sur-Loing. Of his generation he is considered the Swedish artist who was closest to Impressionism. This painting is an excellent example of this – the brushwork and treatment of light recalls the works of artists like Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro.
