Storm Clouds is one of the first paintings by Karl Nordström in his new style, one inspired by Paul Gauguin and which laid the foundation for a new national Swedish art. The motif is from Tjörn, but the work was painted in Varberg. Nordström carries the stylisation of the different elements to the utmost and he painted on an unprepared coarse canvas, which was also Gauguin’s practice.
