French artist Sébastien Bourdon worked at the Swedish royal court from autumn 1652 to summer 1653. He painted several portraits of Queen Kristina in which she wears a simple black silk dress over a white linen garment like in this painting instead of fashionable clothes. Although many portrait painters preferred timeless garments, this unassuming attire can perhaps be interpreted as referring to the Queen’s studies and educated interests.
