Amalia Lindegren was one of Sweden’s most popular artists during the 19th century, and especially her cottage interiors from Rättvik in Dalarna were famous. These were milieu’s where the bourgeois audience saw peasant life as closer to the original “natural” forces and feelings. The motifs then came to be used by Artur Hazelius in tableaux with natural size dolls at Nordiska Museet and in World Exhibitions as part of the national marketing of Sweden.
