    The convalescent was a recurring motif in the late 1800s. Diseases were not uncommon and most people experienced close up the phases of, for example, tuberculosis. Jenny Nyström’s painting shows that she followed fashion and her intention was to show it at the Salon in Paris, but it did not pass the jury’s scrutiny.
