This portrait of a violinist probably represents one of the artist’s three sisters. There is a sense of quiet calm and contemplation about the composition. The broken strings symbolize the transience of life. Anne Vallayer-Coster painted this work three years after her election to the French Academy of Painting and Sculpture, which was considered an exceptional achievement, given that she was just 26 years old, a woman and unmarried.
