This portrait of Märta Gahn was made after Greta Fahlcrantz- Lindberg had started to study painting under André Lhote in Paris. He had developed a kind of cautious Cubism, chiefly inspired per- haps by Cézanne, and had a long succession of Swedish pupils over the years. In Fahlcrantz-Lindberg’s portrait of Gahn, we can sense the influence Lhote’s teaching had had on the artist. At the time it was painted, Märta Gahn was artistic director of the National Asso- ciation of Swedish Handicraft Societies.
