August Malmström devoted many years to working on the illustrations to Esaias Tegnér’s Frithiof’s saga. Towards the end of his life he started to illustrate Njal’s saga which is a mediaeval Icelandic saga. However, the work was never completed and published. This dramatic scene deals with how the horses are urged on to fight each other.
