Rembrandt Harmensz. van Rijn’s etched version of Adam and Eve shows the episode in the Book of Genesis when the first human beings in Paradise are tempted to eat from the tree of knowledge. In contrast to Dürer’s classically idealised depiction of the same scene, the artist has shown the bodies of both parties in all their infirmity. Adam and Eve appear confused, characterised by conflicting emotions.
