Carl Wilhelmson is chiefly associated with scenes from the west coast of Sweden, painted in “Weimar colour”, which gave his pictures a matt surface and an almost fresco-like character. The setting for Wilhelmson’s classic portrait of the sculptor Carl Eldh is the latter’s studio in Bellevue Park in Stockholm, built in 1919, five years before the portrait was painted. The building was designed by Ragnar Östberg and now serves as a museum.
