The Swedish painter Elias Martin spent many years in England where he specialized in landscape painting. His impressions from English landscapes are evident in this imagined scene which is reminiscent of Gainsborough’s art, though with an atmosphere that is more dreamlike in the manner of Claude Lorrain. It would seem highly probable that, while in England, Martin had the opportunity to study Claude’s paintings in one of the many private collections there.
