The wall in the foreground makes Johan Christian Dahl’s painting an unusual view of Vesuvius. By clearly emphasising his vantage point, he wanted to convey his experience of a particular moment on this roof terrace, on the evening of 20 June 1820. The building is a country palace on the Bay of Naples where Dahl spent a few weeks as the guest of the Danish crown prince, Christian Frederick.
