This portrait was painted a year after the 17-year-old Charlotte was married to the British king George III. On her left arm the queen wears a bracelet with a portrait miniature of her husband, which she received on their marriage. The painting is one of Georg David Matthieu’s earliest dated works. When it was made, he was in northern Germany and Charlotte in England. The artist thus worked from another portrait, and not from life.
